Diamonds

Because diamonds are so valuable and rare, it is essential to have a universal grading system for comparing their quality.

Known as the 4C’S :

  • Colour

image Diamond colour is all about what you can not see, and are valued by how closely they approach colourless. The less colour, the higher their value. The scale begins with the letter D, representing colourless, and continues with increasing presence of colour to the letter Z. Many of the colour distinctions are so subtle as to be invisible to the untrained eye, although these slight differences make a very big difference in diamond rarity, and therefore price.
  • Clarity

image Because diamonds formed deep within the earth, under extreme heat and pressure, they often contain unique birthmarks, either internal (inclusions) or external (blemishes). Diamond clarity refers to the absence of these inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds without these birthmarks are rare, and rarity affects a diamonds value. Diamonds are assigned a clarity grade that ranges from flawless (FL) to diamonds with obvious incusions (I3).
  • Cut

image Cut is the factor that fuels a diamonds fire, sparkle and brilliance. Put simply the better a diamond is cut, the more sparkle it will have. When a diamond is cut to correct proportions, light is flashed through the top of the diamond. If the cut is either too shallow or deep light will leak out of the bottom or side of the stone.
  • Carat weight

image Just as a pound is divided into 100pennies, a carat is divided into 100points. For example, a 50point diamond weighs 0.50ct (half a carat). But two diamonds of equal weight can have very different values depending on the other 4C’S Clarity, Colour and Cut. Although the weight does determine a diamonds size, the cut also plays a big part. If you have a 0.50ct diamond that looks like a 1ct diamond, it will most certainly be a shallow stone and therefore have a lower cut grade.
